Timber Framing Site Safety
Assess site for safe access of equipment and materials delivery. Ensure:
- Ground is firm, stable and within acceptable gradient for equipment
- No overhead powerlines
- Not parked between work and vehicle pathways (provide suitable traffic management as required)
Erecting Timber Frames (Timber Framing)
- When setting out and nailing level ceiling joists, use scaffold or ladders from floor below
- Do not walk external top plate
- When fixing end studs to wall frame, face edge of floor while keeping centre of gravity within frame
- Fit guard rails to window and door openings prior to raising frames
- Prepare all braces and fixings prior to raising frame
- Stand behind frame when raising (provide edge protection when raising frames 3.8m or above)
- Place roof trusses onto wall top plates by crane wherever possible
- Do not stand on top plate to receive roof trusses from below.
- When erecting trusses from internal wall or top plate, ensure no persons enter no go zone (1.5m from edge) , planks are adequately supported across span, no unguarded voids.
- Use appropriate scaffold to locate and fix trusses from perimeter.
- When working from raised platform/ladder near windows/voids, ensure fall protection is placed high enough to prevent fall
- Place roof trusses and batten no more than 900mm centres
- Do not overreach when fixing battens. Place body over roof truss
