Planning:

Store minimum quantities required. Use the smallest size cylinders as appropriate.

Obtain current Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS – issue date within 5 years) and ensure these are accessible.

Add quantities to Dangerous Goods/Hazardous Substances register. Conduct risk assessments as required and ensure legislation requirements met for placarding, manifest and fire protection quantities.

Ensure appropriate storage of cylinders:

  • Well ventilated area in a secured location (such as an exterior locked cage, protected from direct sunlight, made from non-combustible materials - metal).
  • Oxygen cylinders stored at least 3m from fuel gas cylinders (unless separated by 4 hour minimum fire-rated wall). *This does not apply for cylinders in use
  • Stored upright and secured so cylinders cannot fall over. DO NOT store empty cylinders upside-down.
  • Provide signage. Example: "Danger. No smoking, No ignition sources". "Restricted Access"
  • Other classes of dangerous goods stored separately
  • Adequate fire protection
  • No ignition sources within 6m

Note: Ignition sources include pilot lights, stoves, heaters, cigarettes, matches/lighters, grinding, welding, power-points, lighting, light switches, radio transmitters, mobile phones, battery powered forklifts etc
