Planning:
Obtain advice from suitably qualified persons (Industrial/ Occupational Hygienists, etc) that air is safe to breathe (levels of lead, PCB’s, asbestos, crystalline silica in cement dust or other contaminants are below occupational exposure levels).
Note: If unsafe levels – ensure suitable PPE is provided.
Obtain advice from suitably qualified persons that premises are safe to enter (Emergency Services, Structural Engineer, Building Inspector).
Note: Do not enter premises that have not been declared structurally safe.
Obtain advice/evidence from licensed Electrician that either power is isolated to premises or the electrical system is in a safe condition (certificate of electrical safety). Ensure gas is isolated to premises.
Provide site induction, inform workers of specific hazards to site. Ensure emergency contact numbers are supplied (Emergency Services, Air monitoring specialists etc)
Develop site and task-specific SWMS for hazardous tasks (such as work above 2m, operation of plant and machinery, heavy lifting –manual handling, clearing up hazardous materials, etc).
