LPG Safety Notes:

  • LPG (propane or butane) is a colourless liquid which readily evaporates into a gas. It has no smell, although it will normally have an odour added for commercial applications to help detect leaks.
  • LPG is supplied in pressurised cylinders to keep it liquefied. The cylinders are strong and not easily damaged, although the valve at the top can be vulnerable to impact. Leaks can occur from valves and pipe connections, most likely as a gas.

  • Owing to its rapid vaporisation and consequent lowering of temperature, LPG, particularly liquid, can cause severe frost burns if brought into contact with the skin. Personal protective equipment (e.g. hand and eye protection) should be worn when handling.

LPG Storage Safety Tips

  • Stand up right and secure with a rope to prevent accidental falls.
  • Use a designated storage area, preferably in a dry covered location not exposed to the weather.
  • Do not store them near elevators, stairs or gangways, or in unventilated enclosures such as cupboards.
  • Handle cylinders one at a time and use rope slings only for lifting — not chains or magnetic lifts.
  • Always close the valves of empty cylinders, and store them separately from full ones.
  • Keep all cylinders away from electrical apparatus, heat and other sources of ignition.

LPG Transportation Safety Tips

  • Cylinders should be loaded in a single layer and secured to prevent movement.
  • The cylinders must be upright
  • Flammable gas danger warning diamonds should be displayed at the rear and on both sides of the vehilce.
  • When unloading and loading park the vehicle as close as possible to the destination or storage area to reduce manual handling.
